For a two week journey that spans about 800 kilometres you can explore the highlights of the rainforests, reefs and islands of Queenslands north but if you can afford to spend the time, take three to five weeks and you can experience it complete with a long Whitsundays sail, a couple of days on the Reef and a full exploration of Townsville, Mackay, Magnetic Island and mission Beach.
Begin at Mackay a charming town small enough to be countrified but large enough to have all the modern facilities you require complete with a new marina precinct with marvelous promenade dining facilities. Heading west on the Peak Downs Hwy and Mackay-Eungella Rd to course through the lush Pioneer Valley. The unmistakable smell of sugar cane will hit you as loaded cane road trains busily work their way along the roadside. The Cane plantations dates back to 1867 and today almost the entire valley floor is planted with it.
This is a trip full of beauty. You can relax and take hikes and spend time at Castle Hill and Magnetic Island. There are even water sports that can entertain you through out your stay there.
From Townsville continue north on the Bruce Highway or two of three hours and then detour eats from Tully to Mission Beach. This area is often one of the places where tourists are not sure about taking the detour to visit but really, it is one of the most gorgeous relaxed places in the whole of North Queensland and where the rainforest meets the sea.
You will end up at the Great Barrier Reef to continue on with your exploration. Just walking and roaming around among the beautiful nature and beaches will be rewarding.
